Already highly regarded Canadian solo artists, together Mae Moore and Lester Quitzau have reached new artistic levels and are making music with even greater openness and depth. Her acoustic pop and folk sound blends seamlessly with his trademark blues and roots groove, and the result is an electric musical connection. Mae Moore and Lester Quitzau will play The Banff Centre’s Margaret Greenham Theatre on Sunday, February 25.
Coming from surprisingly different backgrounds, the songs, styles, and voices of Moore and Quitzau complement each other perfectly. Their first joint CD, Oh My! (2004) delivered well-crafted songs, beautiful vocals, and the sounds of acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and Dobro slide guitar. Among a host of glowing reviews of the duo, Vancouver’s Georgia Straight claimed “the warmth between these two can be successfully extended outward to their audience, and indeed to the world beyond.”
Moore got her start playing the folk clubs and coffeehouses of southern Ontario. She later moved to the thriving club scene of Vancouver and, refusing to rely on imitating others, developed her own unique roots-folk-jazz sound. Moore’s skillful songwriting earned her a Juno nomination for Oceanview Motel, and the popularity of singles such as “Watermark,” “Bohemia,” and “Genuine,” established her as a respected artist in Canada and the United States.
Quitzau has been composing and performing roots music for over 15 years. He has self-produced three albums, was nominated for a Juno for his second release A Big Love, and is highly acclaimed for his solo slide guitar work. Quitzau is also one-third of the roots/world music group Tri-Continental, together with Bill Bourne and Madagascar Slim. A Juno award-winning trio, Tri-Continental is a regular on the stages of Canadian folk festivals.
The Banff Centre’s winter/spring 2007 Playbill Series continues with Willie and Lobo (March 1), Gwynne Dyer (March 9), Tom Cochrane (March 10), Banff Players: A Doll House (March 16 and 17), and Cathie Ryan (March 20).
Tickets for all Banff Centre events are available through the Banff Centre Box Office: 1-800-413-8368 or 403-762-6301.
