The allure of the classic tale of Dracula lies in the nature of the vampire, epitomized as immoral and irrational, yet not without a strong seductive element. One of Canada’s premier ballet companies brings the legend back to life with lavish sets, finely-crafted costumes, atmospheric lighting, and Mark Godden’s choreography. Certain to evoke dread and horror as well as fascination, Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s Dracula will be presented at The Banff Centre’s Eric Harvie Theatre on Saturday, April 7.

Based on Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s production guides audiences through the lives of those who have fallen victim to Dracula’s charm. Flying bats, dancing gargoyles, and mysterious transformations are all part of the company’s spectacular production. Choreographer Mark Godden’s first full-length ballet, Dracula radiates an atmosphere of dark Gothic grandeur. Set to the haunting music of Gustav Mahler, the show features creative set and costume design by Paul Daigle, and lighting design by David Morrison.

Dracula’s cast is comprised of a number of Alberta dancers including Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s principal dancer Tara Birtwhistle of Sherwood Park (as Mina Murray), principal dancer Vanessa Lawson of Edmonton (as Lucy Westenra), second solosit Janet Sartore-De Luca of Calgary (as a maid), and second soloist Darren Anderson of Edmonton (as Dr. Abraham Van Helsing). Dracula will be played by Royal Winnipeg Ballet soloist Johnny Wright, formerly of Alberta Ballet.

Royal Winnipeg Ballet is acclaimed by audiences and critics alike for versatility, technical expertise, and captivating style. Dracula has been so successful for the company it has been turned into a made-for-TV film by Winnipeg director Guy Maddin. The film has earned Maddin an International Emmy for Best Arts Programming, two Junos, the grand prize at Sitges International Festival in Spain, and a Gemini nomination for principal dancer Tara Birtwhistle.

The Banff Centre’s winter/spring 2007 Playbill Series wraps up with Constantinople (April 13), Sursaut Dance Company (April 14), Eric Bibb (April 19), Carlos del Junco (April 22), and Jesse Cook (May 5 and 6).

Tickets for all Banff Centre events are available through The Banff Centre Box Office: 1-800-413-8368 or 403-762-6301.
