Irish American singer-songwriter Cathie Ryan has been described as “one of the leading voices in Celtic music” by the Los Angeles Times. Original and distinctive, her crystalline vocals and evocative compositions have earned her a loyal following throughout Europe and North America. Singing about people, place, memory, and the heart, Cathie Ryan’s trio will grace the stage at The Banff Centre’s Margaret Greenham Theatre on Tuesday, March 20.

Since her tenure as lead singer for the acclaimed group Cherish the Ladies, Ryan has established herself as one of Celtic music’s most popular and enduring entertainers. She has released four CDs: Cathie Ryan, The Music of What Happens, Somewhere Along the Road, and her latest The Farthest Wave. In 2003, Ryan was included among Irish music’s finest female vocalists when she was included on the famous Irish music collection, A Women’s Heart – A Decade On. Equally at home with Gaelic ballads as with the Motown groove of her hometown, Detroit, she gets rave reviews for her recordings and live performances.

Together with Greg Anderson and Hanneke Cassel, Ryan captivates audiences with a seamless blend of traditional contemporary and original Celtic music. Known for songs that communicate the enduring values of home, family, memory, and spirit, with The Farthest Wave, Ryan also touches on subjects of belonging, loss, and perseverance. “This album is not about loss, but about finding what you need inside your own spirit; not about falling, but of rising again,” she says. Ryan is sure to charm fans with her honey-pure soprano voice and bring the house to their feet with her band’s fantastic musicianship and rousing high energy tunes.

The Banff Centre’s winter/spring 2007 Playbill Series continues with Decidedly Jazz Danceworks (March 24), and Shooglenifty (March 25), Lorne Elliott (March 30 and 31), The Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Dracula (April 7), and Constantinople (April 13).

Tickets for all Banff Centre events are available through The Banff Centre Box Office: 1-800-413-8368 or 403-762-6301.
