Behind every seemingly ordinary family are the dreams, imaginations, desires, and memories that make that family extraordinary. Using poetry and humour, realism and fantasy, Sursaut Dance Company’s dance-theatre production Family Portrait proves that appearances can be deceptive, and uncovers the depth, beauty, and happiness hidden in everyday life. With engaging choreography, unusual characters, and charming music all aimed at a young audience, Sursaut brings Family Portrait to The Banff Centre’s Margaret Greenham Theatre, Saturday, April 14.
Led by artistic director and choreographer Francine Chateauvert, in close collaboration with dancer and general manager Adam Dymburt, the company’s artistic creations are distinguished as simple and fresh, with a highly physical choreographic style. As is the case with Family Portrait, Chateauvert’s works tend to express the hidden qualities that can be found within the innocent moments of daily life. Her work has been recognized by the City of Sherbrooke, La Tribune, and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Quebec.
Sursaut Dance Company’s prominent dance creations for youth include Le Bal sans fin (1993), Casse-Noisette et le Roi des Rats (1994), and Les excentriques (1998). Founded in 1985 in Quebec, Sursaut is devoted to the creation, production, and dissemination of dance shows for family audiences. The company’s productions are presented from coast to coast in Canada as well as outside the country.
The Banff Centre’s winter/spring 2007 Playbill Series wraps up with Eric Bibb (April 19), Carlos del Junco (April 22), and Jesse Cook (May 5 and 6).
