One of Canada’s finest and most honoured musical icons, Bruce Cockburn is renowned for including his philosophical, political, emotional, environmental, spiritual, and intellectual epiphanies in the songs he writes. With over 25 albums to his credit, he has spent the last 40 years sharing his experiences, his world views, and his musical talent with appreciative audiences around the globe. Bringing his guitar-based folk-rock style and lyrics complemented by world music influences for a solo appearance, Cockburn will play the outdoor amphitheatre at The Banff Centre’s Donald Cameron Hall on August 9.
Cockburn is a passionate social advocate, and he’s produced a wealth of provocative material, measuring his personal truths against global currents. His involvement with a range of causes and his political concerns became evident with his radio hits “Wondering Where the Lions Are” (1979) and “If I Had a Rocket Launcher” and “Lovers in a Dangerous Time,” both from the album Stealing Fire (1984). Testament to his talent and popularity, Cockburn’s songs have been covered by artists as diverse as Jimmy Buffet, Barenaked Ladies, Anne Murray, Ani DiFranco, and the Jerry Garcia Band.
Cockburn was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 1982 and was promoted to Officer in 2002. At the 30th Annual Juno Awards (2001), he was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. The Canadian Association of Broadcasters inducted him into the Broadcast Hall of Fame in 2002, and he was awarded an Honourary Doctorate from Memorial University of Newfoundland for his lifelong contributions to Canadian music, culture, and social activism.
In the case of inclement weather the concert will be held in the Eric Harvie Theatre.
