Your dog understands you. Or does he? Do fruit flies “enjoy” that over-ripe apple you left on the counter? Join Jay Ingram at The Banff Centre on Tuesday, August 21, as he describes how recent experiments into the evolution of consciousness has made it clear that animals and birds are much smarter than we used to think. The only real question now is: How smart are they? Ingram is host of Discovery Channel’s Daily Planet and is chair of the Centre’s Science Communications program.
Renowned for his outstanding contributions to the popularization of science, Jay Ingram helped to design and launch Daily Planet 10 years ago. He has worked in almost every mass medium, and is best known for hosting CBC’s Quirks and Quarks for 12 years, freelancing for CBC’s Morningside and hosting two CBC documentary series. The author of nine books, he was contributing editor to Owl magazine for five years, his weekly science column in the Toronto Star is now in its 12th year, and for several years he has had a web-based program called Jay’s Journal.
At The Banff Centre, Ingram chairs the Science Communications program, an intensive two-week program aimed at scientists and communicators interested in exploring new ways of telling science stories. Working with some of the world’s leading science writers and broadcasters, participants explore the use of print, visual, and interactive media, as well as other communication formats, with the goal of fostering a more engaging role for science in public culture.
A Science Communications Public Lecture: Can Animals Think? is presented as part of the Banff Summer Arts Festival. Tickets for all Banff Centre events are available through The Banff Centre Box Office: 1-800-413-8368 or 403-762-6301.
