The Banff Centre kicks off its 75th anniversary celebration with Scrap Arts Music, a live percussion show rooted in street performance, rock, and world beat music. Featuring more than 140 hand-crafted instruments made from industrial scrap and materials ranging from accordion parts to artillery shells, Scrap Arts Music is visually and acoustically stunning. This one-of-a-kind theatrical music experience will be followed by a public reception on January 12.

The concert is a fitting event to celebrate the Centre’s 75th anniversary as it features the choreography of innovative Centre alumnus Gregory Kozak. Group founder and leader of Scrap Arts Music, Kozak will delight audience members with his unique “power percussion” technique. He developed this style of playing during a residency at The Banff Centre.

Scrap Arts Music was discovered one day while busking in Vancouver. They were invited to perform at an NBA half-time show, and several months later were a featured performer at a music awards show. From there they took their performance around the world. The Belfast Telegraph describes the Scrap Arts Music experience as a “fantastic visual and aural display of percussive precision full of energetic gymnastics. Original music expertly played and choreographed into a remarkable show.”

Audiences from four continents have welcomed this electrifying quintet with enthusiasm, embracing their intoxicating mix of music, movement, and spectacle. Music, muscle, and metal combine to transcend language, culture, and age in a highly physical, wildly theatrical, and thoroughly entertaining percussion presentation unlike any other.

The Banff Centre’s 75th anniversary celebration will continue throughout 2008 with feature performances and events in Banff and across Canada.

Tickets for all Banff Centre events are available through The Banff Centre Box Office: 1-800-413-8368 or 403-762-6301.
