Subtitled A Tour of the World We Need, Chris Turner’s new book The Geography of Hope chronicles the author’s journey around the world — an escape from the melting ice caps and looming greenhouse gases that feature prominently in most environmental reporting in this new century. Looking for a bright light in the midst of a planet’s worth of doomsday stories, Turner travelled from Alberta to Scandinavia, to Thailand and India, and points between.
On Thursday, January 24, Turner will present The Geography of Hope as part of the Speakers’ Series.
A mix of reportage and analysis, the book examines the cutting edge of sustainability in both First and Third World cultures. The landmarks on Turner’s new map include simple farming technologies and radical ideas, social experimentation, and intelligent community planning. It was named to The Globe and Mail’s “Globe 100” list of the best books of 2007.
Chris Turner is the author of the national bestseller Planet Simpson: How a Cartoon Masterpiece Documented an Era and Defined a Generation. His culture and technology reporting for Shift magazine earned him four National Magazine Awards from 1999 to 2003, including the 2001 President’s Medal for General Excellence, the highest honour in Canadian magazine writing. His writing has also appeared in The Globe and Mail, the Independent, the Sunday Times, Time, Canadian Geographic, and Utne Reader.
The Speaker’s Series is generously sponsored by Banff’s Juniper Hotel.
