Aboriginal artists, producers, and researchers working in new media will have an opportunity to pursue creative projects and professional development at the Banff New Media Institute (BNMI) at The Banff Centre, thanks to scholarship support from Citytv.
The Citytv Scholarships will provide annual support, of $5000 CDN to Aboriginal participants in BNMI programs. The scholarships were first awarded in 2006, and will continue to be awarded on an annual basis until 2013 (inclusive).
“The Banff Centre is proud to be working with Citytv to support Aboriginal artists who are working in the always-evolving field of new media and its impact in the world.” says Susan Kennard, BNMI director/executive producer. “These scholarships will allow participants to research new possibilities, explore creative boundaries, and expand their new media skill sets.”
2006 scholarship winner Darrick Baxter, a website designer for the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN), participated in BNMI’s Almost Perfect Co-Production Residency. During the residency Baxter worked with skilled technicians and mentors to complete research and development work on the potential use of locative media and gaming content for cell phones with the intention of creating entertainment products that will attract the next generation of APTN audience.
