The Banff Centre’s Eric Harvie Theatre will be filled with the world’s biggest brass blowout as the 33rd annual International Trumpet Guild Annual Conference showcases a quintet of concerts from Sunday, June 1, to Thursday, June 5, a mix of classical, jazz, and contemporary arrangements as part of the 2008 Banff Summer Arts Festival. Two-time Grammy-nominated trumpeter Dave Douglas, one of the most original jazz musicians of his generation and director of the Banff International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music, will perform during the Opening Night Gala with Canadian musicians Brad Turner and conference host Jens Lindemann.
On June 2, the Calgary Prime Time Big Band, comprised of the city’s top professional musicians, will hit the Eric Harvie Theatre stage. Twelve principal trumpet players from every major orchestra across Canada will perform together for the first time on June 3 in an evening topped off with legendary virtuoso Allen Vizzutti and Calgary’s Altius Brass.
The internationally renowned Boston Brass and the U.S. Army Brass Quintet along with Canadian Brass founder Fred Mills will showcase American jazz June 4 in an evening that features Russian prodigy Sergei Nakariakov, the “Paganini of the Trumpet.” The concerts conclude with Sweden’s Håkan Hardenberger on June 5, widely considered the greatest trumpet soloist of his time. A noted pioneer of new works, Hardenberger has performed with the orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra.
The five evening concerts are part of the first International Trumpet Guild Conference to be held in Canada. More than 60 individual trumpet players will perform, along with ensembles that include 80 performers of trumpet, trombone and percussion, and three pianists and a jazz rhythm section including a piano, bass, and drums will also be on hand.
