Scientist David Hughes brings peak oil discussion to The Banff Centre April 27

Mountain Culture and Environment Speakers’ Series:
How the Twin Crises of Oil Depletion and Climate Change will Define the Future
Monday, April 27 · 7:30 p.m.
Max Bell Auditorium, The Banff Centre · Tickets $9

Geoscientist David Hughes is one of Canada’s most knowledgeable and articulate speakers and writers on the topic of dwindling world oil reserves. As the buzz gets louder about climate change and the urgency of finding global solutions to a warming planet, Hughes is delivering a message that complements it – we may not have a choice in cutting back on over-consumption of oil. It’s likely to soon disappear on its own.

Hughes will be at The Banff Centre April 27 as part of the Mountain Culture and Environment Speakers’ Series to address the idea that North American oil production has already peaked, and to tackle the looming crises in both climate change and dwindling energy resources. He’s a contributor to Carbon Shift, edited by Thomas Homer-Dixon, a compilation of essays on humans’ dependence on fossil fuels, the current status of non-renewable resources, and where the world is heading.

David Hughes has been studying Canada’s energy resources for almost four decades, including more than 30 years with the Geological Survey of Canada. He developed Canada’s National Coal Inventory to determine the availability and environmental constraints associated with coal resources and coordinated a review of Canada’s unconventional natural gas potential. He has published and lectured widely on global energy issues and the energy sustainability dilemma in North America and internationally, and is president of a consultancy dedicated to research on energy and sustainability issues.
