Jazz virtuoso Wynton Marsalis, with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, will open The Banff Centre’s new Visiting Artists’ Series on September 15 with a powerful performance. Described as the most outstanding jazz musician of his generation, Marsalis will make a special stop in Banff as part of the Heather and N. Murray Edwards Legendary Leaders Series.

Launched this year by Calgary philanthropists and long-time Banff Centre supporters Heather and N. Murray Edwards, the Edwards Legendary Leaders Series is funded by a personal pledge of $1 million over five years. The Series will bring highly acclaimed artists and leaders to The Banff Centre for performances, mentorship, and raising awareness of the Centre’s mandate to inspire creativity at all levels. This invitation to Wynton Marsalis and the JLCO is the first of many anticipated performances that the Edwards family will make possible in Banff.

“Our goal, with the Legendary Leaders Series, is to build and enhance The Banff Centre’s position as a world-class centre for creativity,” says Heather Edwards. “We’re delighted to bring this exciting evening of jazz to Banff, and we look forward to supporting years of ground-breaking performances, enganging presentations, and creative collaboration.”

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in music, the only artist to win the award for jazz, Marsalis is probably the best-known living jazz musician in the world. Acclaimed for his intelligent, intimate stage presence and mastery of jazz technique, with a bandleader’s flair, he has won Grammy Awards for both classical and jazz recordings. Based at New York’s Lincoln Centre, the JLCO was recently described in the Chicago Tribune as “the greatest large jazz ensemble working today.”

This concert on September 15 will launch a new venture in public performance at The Banff Centre, a subscription and single-ticket series that will run from September through May, encompassing classical and contemporary music, dance, comedy, and family shows. The 2009 – 2010 Visiting Artists’ Series will host performances by artists including the St. Lawrence String Quartet, Kidd Pivot, Stuart McLean, the Cottars, the Old Trout Puppet Workshop, and many others.
