Developing Social Network Prototypes - Hot Wired Live Art (HWLA) Comes to The Banff Centre

HWLA (Hot Wired Live Art) is a worklab model seeking to devise networked, social, and performance environments through the process of collective experimentation. The team of 11 international artists is developing at The Banff Centre from August 18 to September 2.

The focus of this session called "Airwaves" is to combine technical expertise (in electronics, streaming media, sensors, wireless technology, live video and audio processing) with lo-tech materials and activities such as synchronized swimming and tai chi. The goal is to connect these materials and artists together to create social, collaborative and live performance scenarios that use technology, but are not about the technology itself. By setting up this creative think-tank we are researching social and artistic applications of these technologies as well as generating a discourse around these issues.

Artistic director of Media & Visual Arts, Sara Diamond, explains the importance of HWLA coming to The Banff Centre. "A key research theme at The Banff Centre is the investigation and development of collaborative creative, learning and design processes and the related appropriate tools. We believe that artists have fundamental knowledge to share in making technologies accessible. HWLA brings together an international team of performers, artists, designers, and scientists to develop just such a technology to the next level. "

The Banff Centre is Canada's only post-secondary institution dedicated to the arts, leadership development, and mountain culture. Programs are designed to enrich professional practice beyond the realm of traditional education. The Centre's unique mountain environment and multidisciplinary setting reflect a commitment to personal growth and lifelong learning.
