New Web space – www.horizonzero.ca – goes live

Horizon Zero, an exciting new bilingual Web space about digital art and culture in Canada, went live on Wednesday July 31. Produced by the Banff New Media Institute at The Banff Centre, for the Department of Canadian Heritage, www.horizonzero.ca explores artists’ work through interviews, reviews, and new interactive modules. Each issue covers a different element of the fascinating terrain where art and science meet. "The navigation metaphor for the site is the horizon, to suggest the power of the Canadian landscape and the horizon of possibilities," says Justine Bizzocchi, producer of Horizon Zero. "Horizon Zero provides a deep and involving Web experience opening up the world of digital art for audiences in Canada."

Horizon Zero moves readers and viewers from a handsomely designed and accessible e-zine to a realm where the rules of the literary and visible world become experimental. The first issue, Write: The literary book as digital form, explores concepts of the "digital book" and the places where words and new media intersect. In addition, this issue presents interactive art inspired by Alan Lightman’s novel Einstein’s Dreams, as well as a completely original work of interactive fiction, a do-it-yourself printable book, photography, poetry, and web resources. Web browsers will also appreciate the site’s Event Horizon: a calendar of digital arts and culture happenings from across Canada and around the world!

The launch of Horizon Zero took place in the TransCanada Pipelines Pavilion at The Banff Centre, on Wednesday July 31, at 7:30 p.m. A crowd of movers and shakers, including guests attending a Banff New Media Institute research summit on Artificial Intelligence, were the first to check out, discuss, and toast the premiere issue.
