The Banff Centre commemorates December 6 Montreal Massacre
|
Banff, AB - On Friday,
December 6, artists in the Beauty
thematic residency at The Banff Centre will commemorate the anniversary
of the Montreal Massacre with a public event connected by a live point-to-point
feed with Studio XX in Montreal. This public event begins at 4:30 p.m. MST in
the Rice Studio, Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Building at The Banff Centre.
December 6 is also the last day of a residency at The Banff Centre that brought together more than 30 artists from Canada and abroad to focus on the theme of Beauty. The artists hope to convey their solemn regard for this tragic anniversary. For this commemorative event, The Banff Centre is teaming up with members of the Montreal womens’ choir Choeur Maha, le Mouvement contre le viol et l’inceste, and the Assault Prevention Centre. Choeur Maha will perform a number of songs for the audience assembled here in Banff. Images and video works from the artists in the Beauty residency will be viewable in Montreal. Artists and staff in Media and Visual Arts at The Banff Centre will also perform two songs, conducted and arranged by Andrea Young, a musician in residence at the Centre. Daniel Barrow, a performance artist in the Beauty residency, will be presenting the work Looking for Love in the Hall of Mirrors. As well, Judith Te’llez, a dancer in residence at the Centre, will collaborate with the singers and lighting designer Andrew Kearney in a performance marking the memory of each of the 14 women killed in Montreal. This particular Media and Visual Arts residency has reflected on current concerns and ideas about the role of beauty in modern-day life and culture over the past seven weeks. The list of participating Banff Centre artists and staff include:
