Delicious Double Shot of Community Art at The Banff Centre
|
Collaboration will be
the theme of two special art presentations at The Banff Centre that begin next
week. The first is an exhibition of art by students from the Banff Community
High School on Thursday, June 5. The opening of this exhibit will be followed by
the unveiling of a sculptural mosaic made entirely of candy produced by
students, resident artists, and members of the Bow Valley community.
The candy mosaic is a project conceived by Lisa Neighbor, a Toronto artist participating in the Big Rock Candy Mountain residency at The Banff Centre. The project presented a unique opportunity for art students and community members to work alongside artists from around the world participating in the residency. Big Rock Candy Mountain, inspired by the folk song of the same name, examines the topic of "sweet consumption" and ideas such as utopia, consumer culture, decoration and waste — using candy as a metaphor for discussion. Under Construction is an exhibition of artwork produced by students from grade eight through 12 from the Banff Community High School. This collaboration gained momentum over the 2002/2003 school year while the high school underwent extensive renovations and classes were relocated to the Centre. The product of the students' work during their time at the Centre will be exhibited in the West Lobby of the Eric Harvie Theatre from June 5 to 12. Receptions for both events are open to the public and begin at 7 p.m. on June 5 in the Eric Harvie Theatre’s West Lobby. At 8:30 p.m. the celebrations will move to the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Building for opening remarks and the official unveiling of the Big Rock Candy Mountain sculptural mosaic. Admission is free. -30- [/communications/common/media_contacts_mediarelations_and_arts.htm] |
