360º of Creativity at this summer’s Banff Arts Festival

The Banff Centre announces the Banff Arts Festival 2001 line-up, from May 14 to August 12

The Banff Centre, Canada's only post-secondary institution dedicated to the arts, leadership development, and mountain culture, announces the line-up for the Banff Arts Festival 2001 from May 14 – August 12. The Banff Arts Festival includes all art forms – Jazz, Chamber Music, Dance, Drama, Opera, Visual Arts, Writing, and more – 360º of Creativity.

Highlights from the Banff Arts Festival 2001 include the world premiere of BONES: an Aboriginal Dance Opera, a new production of the timeless classic The Odyssey, and a dance celebration of the great choreographer, George Balanchine.

Vocal Jazz kicks off the Festival in style, on May 14, and is the first in an array of stunning summer concerts. The Cultural Journalism series returns in July, while Computer Voices/Speaking Machines, a new media exhibition, is presented in the Walter Phillips Gallery.

MUSIC

Vocal Jazz May 14 - 19 The Club pay-what-you-can Audience members enjoy the intimate cabaret setting of The Club, where a variety of singers each night perform jazz standards and improvisation. Renowned vocalists Jay Clayton, Sheila Jordan, and Viviane Cardinal wrap up Vocal Jazz week with a closing night concert. (May 19 Concert, Tickets: $15/$10)

Late Night Jazz May 22 – June 8 The Club pay-what-you-can Three weeks of sizzling heat with performances by up-and-coming jazz musicians. Order a drink, pull up a chair, and enjoy some Late Night Jazz.

Saturday Night Jazz May 26 – June 9 MGT Adults $15 Students/Seniors $12 These Saturday night jazz concerts feature an array of distinguished guest artists including Joe Lovano (sax); Don Thompson (piano/vibraphone/double bass); Judi Silvano (vocals); Dave Douglas (trumpet); Jim Black (drums) and Kenny Werner (piano).

The Art of the Ensemble June 15 – 29 RRH Adults $15 Students/Seniors $10 Quartets, trios, and duos present chamber works in a series of concerts that are both engaging and enjoyable.

Join a cast of spineless sailors, a slavering cyclops, a sly sorceress, a chorus of comic pigs, and a bag of winds, as we present a stage adaptation of The Odyssey. This epic tale for family audiences will take place outside amid the spectacular backdrop of the Rocky Mountains. Co-produced with Manitoba Theatre for Young People.

Gifted young dancers from across Canada come to Banff to take part in our Dance Training program. After six weeks of intensive training, these young dancers are featured in four public performances.

BONES: An Aboriginal Dance Opera

Infused with Aboriginal dance and song, BONES immerses the audience in a cultural experience that travels beyond watching and listening into a fusion of storytelling, movement, sound, and colour. The story of BONES follows our journey on this Earth, the return of our bones to the Earth, and the return of our Spirits to the Stars.

A fantastic, interactive exhibition featuring the inspired work of new media artists David Rokeby, Jocelyn Robert and Emile Morin.

The 5th in an annual series of exhibitions co-presented with the Aboriginal Arts Program. This exhibit brings together ten contemporary artists of First Nations ancestry. For First Nations, multiple image making is relatively a new strategy, occurring in the last 200 years. These artists explore this cultural strategy and assert a profound link between themselves, their political, their historical and cultural beliefs

Enjoy an evening of poetry and short fiction as writers from the five-week Writing Studio residency share their previously published writing as well as works-in-progress. Each evening will feature distinguished Canadian authors from the Writing Studio faculty.

Cultural Journalism Conversations              July 2, 9, 16, 23 RRH Free
Hosting this year's popular festival series is Maclean Hunter Chair Alberto Ruy-Sánchez. These free lectures feature different speakers from the realm of cultural journalism. Hear some of the brightest minds speak on topics ranging from politics to cultural trends.

An interpretative hike through the Rocky Mountains landscape that inspired the enduring work of Walter J. Phillips.

Art Walks                                                      August 13 – 17 Free
A one-hour guided tour of The Banff Centre campus, spotlighting the many works from the Permanent Collection on public display.

PLAYBILL SERIES

Most performances at The Banff Centre grow out of the learning experiences and professional development opportunities for participants enrolled in our programs. In addition, the Theatre Arts department offers a year-round Playbill Series, which features touring productions and concerts.
