Australians Miki Tsunoda (violin) and Caroline Almonte (piano) are back at The Banff Centre for the next two weeks in Music & Sound's fall residency program.
"The wonderful thing about being in a Banff Centre residency program is it allows you time to work on your art form, as well as opportunities to present it to the public," says Almonte.
This is the third time DUO Tsunoda/Almonte have been at the Centre in the last 12 months, participating in residency programs. During their last visit in February of this year, they were preparing for international competitions and recorded a CD which will be released in 2000. Their work paid off - in May of this year the DUO won first prize in the prestigious 'Premio Trio di Trieste' International Chamber Music Competition in Italy.
A result of this win is a 20 concert tour through Italy, Buenos Aires and Spain beginning this December and continuing over the next year. In preparation for it, the DUO has come back to the Centre.
"From our previous experiences here we know we can get double the work done that we can while we're at home," says Tsunoda.
"Also," adds Almonte, "there is such warmth and support in the community of artists at the Centre. We get the opportunity to work with visiting artists that are like David Takeno from the United Kingdom, as well as with Isobel Rolston who's known us and our development since our first visits to the Centre in the early 90's.
Performing several times over the next two weeks, the DUO can be heard in concerts on November 12 (7:30pm, Rolston Hall), 14 (2:30pm, Canmore) and 16 (4:30pm, Chamber Music Studio).
Works by composers currently attending the Centre's residency program can also be heard at the Friday, November 12, 7:30pm in Rolston Recital Hall. Composers Stacy Garrop (USA), Marcelo Gaete (Mexico) and Nathaniel Tull Phillips (USA) are featured in this concert. Saxophonist Silke Eberhard (Germany), pianist Rachel Iwaasa (USA), flutist Tina Marsden (Australia), percussionist Jon McCaslin (Canada), cellist Isabel Blomme (Sweden), violinist Martin Stenssen (Sweden), pianist Staffan Sandstrom (Sweden) and violist Kate Read (UK) perform these compositions. Works by Berio, Bach and Penderecki are also performed during this evening concert.
A concert on Wednesday, November 10 at 12 noon in Rolston Recital Hall features performances by other residency program musicians: soprano Meara Jones (Canada), the Horus Piano Duo Ahmed Abou-Zahra (Egypt) and Nora Emody (Hungary), pianist Zoe Browder (USA), violist Cyrille Mercier (France), pianist Dmitry Nesterov (Canada), violist Aurelie Adolphe-Engelmann (France) and pianist Rachel Iwaasa (USA).
Musicians then travel to Canmore on November 14 for a Sunday afternoon concert at 2:30pm at Policeman's Creek Drop-In Centre, 701 9th Street, with host Isobel Moore Rolston. This afternoon concert features pianist Kathy Tremills (Canada) performing Scarlotti Sonatas, violist Aurelie Adolphe-Engelmann (France) performing Bach Chaconne, as well as DUO Tsunoda/Almonte (Australia), flutist Tina Marsden (Australia) and pianist John Hsiang Tu (Taiwan).
Further opportunity to hear these talented musicians is presented with Music & Sound's afternoon concerts. These hour-long recitals are held at 4:30pm in the Chamber Music Studio of the Music & Sound building. On November 9 hear a piano recital with Esther Honens Laureate Eugene Watanabe (USA), on November 11 a lecture recital by resident composer Nathaniel Tull Phillips, and on November 16 a recital featuring performances by Swedish pianist Staffan Sandstrom and by the Australian violin/piano DUO Tsunoda/Almonte.
