The last week of the Banff International Jazz workshop offers jazz lovers various opportunities to indulge in listening to exciting new music!
"With nearly 100 participants and faculty in this years program, the Jazz Workshop is more exciting than ever" says Craig Day, program co-ordinator. "New venues, including the Dining Room and Props Pub have provided the participants with ample playing opportunities, and the public with many chances to hear some great jazz musicians."
Resident musicians will headline the stage at The Club every night from Monday to Friday at 9 p. m. Located in The Banff Centres theatre complex, The Club makes a great venue to enjoy a variety of ensembles that have been rehearsing and creating music in workshop sessions for the past two weeks. The concerts are pay-what-you-can at the door. In addition, The Banff Centres Props Pub has live jazz music nightly starting at 10.30 p. m.
The concerts at Props Pub and The Club reflect the fact that performing is an integral part of the Banff International Jazz Workshop experience. While workshop participants are attending masterclasses concerned with various theoretical, practical and philosophical aspects of jazz music, playing is still the main focus of the program. Informal jam sessions, often including some of the workshops prolific faculty, take place literally at any time in the Music & Sound building at The Banff Centre.
Every year, a line-up of world-renowned jazz musicians gather at The Banff Centre, attracting young musicians from around the world. This years faculty include David Restivo (piano); Judi Silvano (voice); Joey Baron and Owen Howard (drums); Joe Lovano, David Schroeder, Dave Pietro and Joakim Milder (saxophone); Chuck Deardorf and Johannes Weidenmueller (double bass); Gordon Vernick and Dave Ballou (trumpet); Ben Monder (guitar); and Chistophe Schweizer (trombone). The program is led by artist-in-residence Kenny Werner (piano).
Your last chance to hear some of these amazing musicians will be the final concert on Saturday, June 3 at 8 p. m. The concert takes place in the Margaret Greenham Theatre and features the workshop faculty together with participants. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students and seniors.
