World Renowned Composers in Banff for Nights of Premieres

On July 14 and 15, The Banff Centre for the Arts presents two Nights of Premieres. Friday, July 14 features the North American premiere of International Composer of the Year, Krzysztof Penderecki's instrumental Sextett. The Grand Choral Concert on Saturday, July 15, features both the world premiere of Recordare, a new choral work by the leading Canadian choral composer Imant Raminsh, and the Canadian premiere of Penderecki's Credo.

At the Grand Choral Concert, Penderecki conducts the Canadian premiere of his beautiful and moving Credo, a mammoth work scored for five soloists, girls choir, mixed choir and orchestra. The Credo is based on the standard Latin version of the historic Nicene Creed and follows the tradition of earlier symphonic masses, such as Handel's Messiah and Mozart's Requiem. At the same concert, Imant Raminsh conducts the world premiere of his newest piece, Recordare, written as a companion piece to the Credo. Commissioned by Music Canada Musique 2000 and The Banff Centre for the Arts, Recordare is based on the sequence "Dies Irae" from the Requiem mass.

Choristers and musicians from Vancouver and Calgary have been busily rehearsing both the Credo and Recordare since May. They join forces in Banff on July 12 to collectively work under the direction of both Penderecki and Raminsh.

"What makes this evening so special," says Tom Rolston, artistic director of The Banff Centre's Music & Sound summer program, "is that in addition to the privilege of premiering two incredible choral works, this project is a true achievement in the spirit of community and camaraderie. All these musical and artistic forces joining together on this one night for the Grand Choral Concert is a marvelous testament to our collective calling."

The mass choir performing on July 15 include members of the Phoenix Chamber Choir from Vancouver, the Calgary Philharmonic Chorus, the Festival Chorus of Calgary, the Mount Royal Kantorei, and the Calgary Girls Choir. The orchestra includes musicians from the University of Calgary Wind Ensemble, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and visiting artists and resident musicians in Music & Sound's residency program.
