Toronto violinist Elissa Lee is the first place winner of the 23rd Annual Eckhardt-Gramatté National Music Competition, and will be performing in Rolston Recital Hall at The Banff Centre this Thursday October 19 at 4:30 pm.

As part of the first-place win, Ms. Lee was awarded a cash prize, a music residency at The Banff Centre and a concert tour from coast to coast, including this stop in Banff. Pianist Jeanie Chung will accompany her during the tour. Ms. Lee is considered a talented and versatile young musician, and is a graduate student at the University of Toronto where she studied with Lorand Fenyves, one of Music & Sound’s visiting artists since 1973.

Also this week, the Wednesday noon-hour series continues with a great concert in Rolston Recital hall featuring a performance of the Bach Trio Sonata. This Friday night at 7:30 pm features three visiting artists from the USA: cellist Laurence Lesser, violinist Masuko Ushioda Lesser, and flutist Carol Wincenc, collaborating with our resident musicians. Laurence Lesser is a frequent visiting artist in Banff and has appeared as a soloist with orchestras worldwide including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Masuko Ushioda Lesser has performed world-wide and lives in Boston where she teaches at the New England Conservatory of Music. Carol Wincenc is currently on the faculty of Julliard and is a frequent guest or major orchestras and festivals throughout the United States.

Music & Sounds’ Sunday Canmore concerts begin this Sunday, October 22 at 2:30 pm in the Canmore Collegiate High School Theatre. The Sunday concerts are informal and are a great opportunity for audiences to speak to and get to know Music & Sound’s winter residents.

For further details or tickets, please call The Banff Centre Box Office at 762-6301. Friday evening concerts are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors/students. Sundays and noon-hour concerts are pay-what-you-can. Programming subject to change.
