Music & Sound at The Banff Centre kicks off its Winter Concert Season on January 19th with the highly anticipated performance of the Miró String Quartet from New York. This concert, featuring performances from other international musicians as well, will take place at 12 noon in the Rolston Recital Hall.
Winners of the 1998 Banff International String Quartet Competition, The Miró Quartet was awarded $20,000, a set of custom-made silver-mounted bows by renowned Canadian archetier Michael Vann, a residency at the Centre and a CD recording package at the Centres audio studios. As well, the quartet won a Canadian recital tour that has taken them to Kitchener-Waterloo, London, Calgary, Edmonton, Kelowna, Victoria and now Banff. They have also been invited to perform in Spain later this month.
"We are so pleased to have the Miró join us again in Banff as they complete their recital tour," says artistic director Isobel Moore Rolston. "This young quartet has had a wonderful boost to their careers by winning this competition and have been making quite an impact with these various Canadian concerts, receiving rave reviews across the country."
Violinists Daniel Ching and Sandy Yamamoto, violist John Largess and cellist Joshua Gindele comprise the Miró Quartet, named after the celebrated surrealist artist, Joan Miró. Since winning the prestigious competition in 1998, the quartet has spent the last year at Juilliard as the recipients of the Lisa Arnhold Fellowship, an honour which continues for the 1999/2000 season. This award includes a New York debut at Alice Tully Hall and the opportunity to serve as the teaching assistants to the Juilliard String Quartet.
Also this week, Music & Sound will be introducing some of the new arrivals in the winter residency program with a performance on January 21 at 7:30pm in Rolston Recital Hall. The Friday Evening concert series this season runs until March 17 and will feature performances from visiting artists including jazz pianist and bassist Don Thompson (Canada), flutist Timothy Hutchins (Canada), percussionist Bill Cahn (USA), pianist Anton Kuerti (Canada), violinist Thomas Brandis (Germany), cellist Antonio Lysy (Canada), harpist Erica Goodman (Canada) and hornist Sören Hermansson (Sweden).
Canmore Sundays begin once again on January 23 at a new location: the Canmore Collegiate High School Theatre. Every Sunday, musicians from the program will present a dynamic concert with repertoire from familiar classics to new composition. Beginning at 2:30pm and running each Sunday through to March 12, these informal afternoon events are co-hosted by Music & Sounds artistic director Isobel Moore Rolston and the students from Canmore Collegiate High School.
