A Night of Jazz with Don Thompson!

TODAY’S DATE: January 21, 2000

WHO: Canadian jazz pianist Don Thompson

WHAT: Music & Sound Winter Residency Program at The Banff Centre

WHEN: January 25 – February 2. 2000

WHERE: Rolston Recital Hall at The Banff Centre

Composer, pianist, bassist and vibraphonist Don Thompson performs in collaboration with winter residents this Friday, January 28 at 7:30 pm in Rolston Recital Hall.

With over 30 recordings to his credit, Don Thompson is a major figure in today’s jazz scene. His recording with John Handy’s quintet, Live at Monterery, was one of the most popular jazz recordings of the 1960’s, and his work with George Shearing and Mel Tormé won a Grammy award in 1984.

"I’’m really excited about working with Don Thompson again," says trumpeter Stuart Krause, a winter residency participant who first worked with Thompson in 1996 during a summer jazz workshop here at The Banff Centre. "He’s a Canadian legend and an inspiration to us all. He is the type of man who encourages and supports all musicians, and it is such a pleasure to be around him," says Krause.

Active as a teacher at Humber College, York University and University of Toronto, Don Thompson has been affiliated with The Banff Centre for 13 years. He is a regular faculty guest to Music & Sound’s jazzprogram, and is a favourite amongst resident musicians.

Also performing in Friday night’s jazz concert are: Pernille Bévort, saxophone (Denmark), the Anne Dueholm & Henrik Kunz Duo from Denmark, and the Toronto-based Mike Webster Quintet featuring Mike Webster and Brodie West on saxophone, Stuart Krause on trumpet, Derek Shirley on bass and Shawn Abedin on drums. It will be a wonderful night of jazz to warm the soul!

In addition to the great line-up on Friday nights, Music & Sound is pleased to present Wednesday "Music at Noon" concerts in Rolston Recital Hall, and "Casual Afternoon" concerts on selected Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at 4:30 pm in the Chamber Music Studio. These informal concerts are pay-what-you-can, and feature collaborations among participants of the winter residency program.

Canmore Sundays continue to March 12. Join musicians from the residency program at our new venue, the Canmore Collegiate High School, for dynamic concert repetoire. These informal concerts give you the opportunity to meet the musicians and learn more about the music they have chosen to play. Sunday concerts begin at 2:30pm, and are pay-what-you can.

Evening concert tickets are $12 for adults, $8 for students and seniors, and $6 for concert lovers. Sundays and noon-hour concerts are pay-what-you-can For further details or tickets, please call The Banff Centre Box Office at 762-6301.
