An Evening with the BBCs Iain Burnside
Join us for an evening with one of Britains most popular musical personalities, Iain Burnside. Mr. Burnside is a pianist as well as a broadcaster with Britains BBC radio, and will be performing in Rolston Recital Hall this Thursday, March 15 at 7:30 pm, for the last concert of Music & Sounds winter concert season.
In addition to hosting and presenting the evenings concert repertoire, Iain will perform a work by Debussy for two pianos with resident musician Lena Johnson (Sweden), and a work by Schubert for 4 hands with Alice Mullay (Scotland).
Iain Burnside combines life behind the microphone with life on the piano stool - changing the balance from week to week. He followed a music degree at Oxford University with more specific piano study at the Royal Academy of Music and the Chopin Academy in Warsaw. Working as a freelance pianist, he has come to specialize in the song repertoire. He is, however, allergic to the word 'accompanist', which he tries to avoid wherever possible!
It was this vocal background which led to his first faltering steps in broadcasting, as a nervous but smartly dressed presenter of Cardiff Singer of the World. BBCs Radio 3 signed him up shortly after, establishing him as the regular presenter of the weekly song program, Voices. Iain Burnside has combined his roles as pianist and presenter in a number of popular and well-received radio series, including From Where I'm Sitting on Radio 3 and The Music Party for BBC World Service.
Last year, Iain Burnside created Century Songs, a critically acclaimed concert series with seven young singers 100 songs by 100 different composers forming a portrait of the 20th century. He has also devised programs for Londons South Bank Centre, St Johns Smith Square and Sheffields Music In The Round.
An avid educationalist, Iain Burnside holds the position of Professor at Londons Guildhall School of Music & Drama and in addition has given guest classes at The Banff Centre, the University of Michigan and The Juilliard School, New York.
