The Banff Centre’s Music Makers Take to the Road
|
Banff - The Banff Centre’s Music Makers will
present an imaginative and interactive musical performance to Alberta’s
elementary school children this month, taking their newly created production
Andy in Dreamland on tour. Dynamic and fun, this children’s show is a
creative approach to teaching children about musical instruments from around
the world and the art of music making. Music & Sound created the Music Makers residency eight years ago as an outreach program. Each year, the Music Makers—musicians in residence at The Banff Centre—develop, create, and produce an educational music program. "The Music Makers residency is a unique opportunity for talented young musicians to explore new ways of bringing music to the public through education," says Isobel Rolston, artistic director/executive producer of Music & Sound at The Banff Centre. Andy in Dreamland is the story of a curious little girl who falls
into her dream world when she begins a quest to find her own song. She meets
four different characters who introduce her to four fundamental elements of
music: melody, harmony, rhythm, and tempo. Through her journey, she learns a
great deal about music and also finds her inner voice. "The performance not
only engages children in a magical story, but introduces them to the
excitement that wonderful music can invoke," says Rolston. |

This 30-minute interactive performance introduces young audiences to several
instruments, including the violin, piano, bassoon, and santour, a 72-string
percussion instrument from Iran. Woven into Andy in Dreamland will be
Chopin’s Etude in A flat Major, Op.25, No. 1 (a.k.a. The Aeolian
Harp Etude); an excerpt of Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto; the ever
popular Flight of the Bumble Bee by Rimsky Korsakov; and a
folksong from France by Rossignolet Du Bois, arranged by Andrea Young, one
of the Music Makers. Andy in Dreamland is sure to get feet tapping,
imaginations running wild, and children whooping with delight. The Music Makers tour will bring the performance to elementary schools in Cochrane, Exshaw, Banff, and Canmore this week (March 3-7). The musicians will also be performing in Didsbury (March 17), Wetaskiwin (March 18-19), Leduc/Beaumont and Calmar (March 20-21) and Red Deer (March 23-28). A special public performance will take place on March 23 at 3:00 p.m. in the Red Deer Museum Gallery. In addition to these Alberta performances, the Music Makers will return to Bow Valley schools to conduct instrumental clinics for music students. This interaction between the Music Makers and young, aspiring music students makes this program a proven success.
