John Murrell’s Sarah (Memoir) wows Parisian audiences

Banff, AB -- Memoir, a play by The Banff Centre’s John Murrell about the final summer in the life of legendary French actress Sarah Bernhardt, is wowing Parisians. Since it opened on September 2, 2002 in Paris the production has become a resounding hit. The play has been held over until at least the end of June 2003.

The current French production uses the title Sarah, and stars famous French actors Fanny Ardant and Robert Hirsch at the Théâtre Edouard VII in Paris. In Fall 2003, it will begin an extensive tour of French–speaking Europe. It will also be telecast live next year and packaged in VHS and DVD formats for the commercial market.

Since its premiere 25 years ago, Memoir has been produced in every major Canadian city and in both official languages. Memoir was a highlight of The Stratford Festival’s 1990 season. It continues to be performed throughout North and South America, and especially in Europe, where it had a three-year run at the historic Théâtre de l’Oeuvre in Paris in the early 1980’s. In 2001, Memoir was mounted in Japan and will be revived in 2003 for a tour of all major cities in that country.

Murrell is artistic director and executive producer of Theatre Arts at The Banff Centre. His next artistic venture is the world premiere of the new Canadian opera Filumena that will have its debut at the Calgary Opera on February 1, 2003. Filumena also headlines next summer’s Banff Arts Festival (July 11 - August 10, 2003) at The Banff Centre. Murrell has written the libretto for Filumena with music by outstanding young Alberta composer John Estacio.
