May 14, 2004 The Banff Centre and Dancers’ Studio West present Les Ballets jazz de Montréal in Banff
Friday, May 28 - 8 p.m. | Eric Harvie Theatre | The Banff Centre Short Works: 24 is a series of one-minute micro-works that Pite developed in collaboration with composer Owen Belton in 2001. It’s a study in isolated movement and kinetic interaction that moves across the stage in quick vignettes. The Stolen Show, also created with Belton, is about spectacle and entertainment vs. pure art. The final piece, finished during their Banff residency, will give Pite and Les Ballets jazz a complete cycle of works, which will go from The Banff Centre performance to a showcase at the Canada Dance Festival in Ottawa on June 4. On the international dance scene, Les Ballets jazz de Montréal continues to evolve with the vitality and openness that have been the company's hallmarks since its inception in the early 1970s. Led by artistic director Louis Robitaille, the core mission of Les Ballets jazz is to showcase dancers’ talent while encouraging a new generation of choreographers. Crystal Pite, resident choreographer for Les Ballets jazz, grew up in Victoria, B.C. She trained with Pacific Dance Centre, and at summer programs with the National Ballet School, The Banff Centre, and the School of the Toronto Dance Theatre. In 1988, she joined Ballet British Columbia in Vancouver. During her eight years as a dancer there, she performed in the works of many choreographers, including John Alleyne, and Christopher House. She began choreographing for Ballet British Columbia in 1990, and has since created new works for companies including Alberta Ballet, Ballet Jorgen, and several independent artists. She was the recipient of The Banff Centre’s Clifford E. Lee Award for Choreography in 1995.
Tickets to Les Ballets jazz de Montréal on May 28 are $22 for adults, $18 for students and seniors. - 30 - Downloadable images are available.
