Exhibition offers cross-cultural perspective on consumer culture
(Banff, Alberta) The Walter Phillips Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Quoting Commercialism, a revealing exhibition organised by curator Chris Reid. The show features work by Shinobu Akimoto (Toronto), Greg A. Hill (Ottawa), Mitch Robertson (Toronto) and Jan Wade (Vancouver).
Each artist explores aspects of consumer culture through objects and images that represent materialism in contemporary society. Everything from facsimiles of packaging, souvenirs, and catalogue pages to the actual items themselves make their way into these artists’ work. At the same time, they use aspects of the promotional industry in distinctly different ways and for markedly different purposes. The exhibition includes a diverse range of media including sculpture, drawing, and digital photographs.
Quoting Commercialism reveals how, and to what extent, four artists from different cultural backgrounds construct their individual personas and express their identities within a multicultural, consumerist society. Using puns and play, they offer a cross-cultural perspective on the influence of media and advertising in the age in which we live.
Quoting Commercialism is co-produced with the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba.
The exhibition runs from February 16 through March 31, 2002. Both the opening reception on Friday, February 15 at 7:00 pm, and the Artist’s Talk on Saturday, February 16 at 2:00 pm are open to the public, and will be held in the Walter Phillips Gallery. The Walter Phillips Gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
