Travelling Exhibit of Artist Books, Zines, and Independent Publications Rolls Into Banff
|
(Banff, Alberta) The Walter Phillips Gallery is pleased to announce the visit of the Bookmobile, a touring exhibition of artist books, zines and independent publications. The project travels across the United States and Canada drawing audiences in public spaces of various urban and rural communities. The Bookmobile is a converted vintage Airstream trailer with a new collection of over 300 book works. The Bookmobile project is a grassroots collective based in Montreal and Philadelphia that supports the growth of independent locally produced media. Join us for an artist’s talk to learn more about the Bookmobile and the history of printing. Participants will see the evolution of the Bookmobile project from the first artist book library up to the current tour. The talk will also cover the history of printing from the invention of the press through 1930’s science fiction fanzines to contemporary self publishing and artists‘s books. A discussion period will follow. The Artist’s Talk will take place in Room 204 of the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Building at The Banff Centre on Thursday, July 18th at 3pm. Admission is free. The Bookmobile coordinators will also conduct a two-hour hands-on book binding workshop. Using ribbons for structure and decoration, participants will learn how to create a book with a simple and efficient non-adhesive binding. Admission is free. Participants should meet in the lobby of the Walter Phillips Gallery in Glyde Hall at 1pm on Saturday, July 20th. The Bookmobile will be parked in front of Lloyd Hall at The Banff Centre from Thursday, July 18th to Saturday, July 20th and will be open each day from noon to 5pm. Admission is free. -30- [/communications/common/media_contacts_mediarelations_and_arts.htm] |
