Prize-winning designer Andrew King to speak at The Banff Centre

Calgarian Andrew King, winner of the Canada Council for the Art’s 2003 Prix de Rome, will talk about his award-winning proposal at a presentation at The Walter Phillips Gallery on Saturday, August 23, at 2 p.m. His project is a study of the gates of Rome from an architectural, sociological, and cultural perspective. His work will touch on themes including the use of public space, the conditions of exile and displacement, and the relationship between architecture and cultural spectacles, such as theatre and cinema.

The $34,000 Prix de Rome recognizes the work of an individual or collective actively engaged in the field of contemporary architecture whose work shows exceptional talent. The award, established in 1987, enables the winner to pursue independent work in Rome and make an original contribution to the development of the discipline. King will have the use of an apartment-studio located on the Piazza Sant’Apollonia in the Trastevere district of the city for one year.

This is the second consecutive year an Albertan has won the Prix de Rome. The 2002 winner was Calgarian Marc Boutin.

King holds a Master’s degree in Architecture and a Bachelor of Environmental Design from the Technical University of Nova Scotia, and studied Theatre Arts at Acadia University. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Calgary School of Architecture and has been a practicing architectural designer for the past 15 years.

King’s firm, aka/andrewkingstudio, has been involved in numerous architectural projects, competitions, and exhibitions over the past several years, including: the Kensington Clinic medical facility; the Thread studio; the Tros/Keefe House; the renovations and design masterplan for the Calgary Centre for the Performing Arts (Epcor Centre); and several private residences. He is also a senior design consultant with Zeidler Carruthers and Associates in Calgary.

The Walter Phillips Gallery is located in Glyde Hall at The Banff Centre, and is open Tuesday to Sunday, from 12 noon to 5 p.m., and Thursdays from 12 noon to 9 p.m. Admission to the Gallery is free.
