Walter Phillips Gallery appoints new media expert Steve Dietz as curatorial fellow

Curator’s Talk: Thursday, June 10, 7 p.m.
Walter Phillips Gallery, The Banff Centre Free

Watch for the Walter Phillips Gallery at The Banff Centre to build even stronger ties to the place where art and technology mix with the arrival of freelance curator Steve Dietz for a curatorial fellowship. One of the biggest names in new media, he brings his expertise to the Gallery for a year-long session of talks, collaborations, curatorial work, and scholarship.

The Banff Centre has been at the forefront of innovation in art and technology, and new media for a decade. It’s home to the Banff New Media Institute, and the art and culture e-zine HorizonZero, and has attracted countless new media specialists as visiting artists and program participants, producing visual art exhibitions, co-productions, and online collaborations with artists from around the world. Dietz’ presence as curatorial fellow with the Walter Phillips Gallery boosts all these endeavours immeasurably.

Formerly editor of the journal American Art, and founding chief of publications and new media initiatives at the Smithsonian’s American Art Museum, Steve Dietz founded the New Media Initiatives department at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis in 1996. He became curator of new media at the Center where he originated the online Gallery 9 and the digital art study collection. Curator of new media exhibitions at galleries around North America, and in Europe, Dietz has published articles in journals and magazines including Artforum, Design Quarterly, Art in America, and BlackFlash. In addition to his fellowship with the Walter Phillips Gallery, he continues to teach at the University of Minnesota and the Minneapolis College of Art + Design, and will direct ZeroOne, the San Jose International Festival of Art and Technology in 2006.

As part of his fellowship, Dietz will collaborate with curator Sarah Cook and Banff Centre director of visual arts Anthony Kiendl on an exhibition at the Walter Phillips Gallery called Database Imaginary. The exhibition will be an inter-disciplinary exploration of contemporary art, historical artifacts, and material from science, industry, and everyday life that will run from November 13, 2004, to January 23, 2005.

Dietz will speak about some of his previous projects on Thursday, June 10 at 7 p.m. in the Walter Phillips Gallery.
