Banff Centre reels out second season of independent film screenings

The Banff Centre’s popular Reel Time film series kicks off October 4 with The Corporation, an inside look at capitalism run amok. Winner of an Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival, this Canadian documentary opens the series on October 4 at the Lux Cinema in Banff. Part of the proceeds from the screening will be donated to the Banff Public Library.

Begun last year by the Centre’s Walter Phillips Gallery, Reel Time features films from the Toronto International Film Festival, circulated through the Festival’s Film Circuit program. Each of the monthly screenings will support both the Gallery, and a Bow Valley charity. This season, Reel Time sponsor the Avalanche Movie Company will also collect for the designated charity with coin drop boxes in their Banff store for a week in advance of each screening, and by donating one day’s late fees per month.

The success of the first season of Reel Time, with its trivia and door prizes, has made this new season a hotly anticipated event. The lineup includes:

October 4, 7 p.m.The Corporation. This National Film Board Documentary takes a stand against the power of big business, and that culture’s “Terminator-esque” drive to build nothing but wealth for shareholders. Benefits the Banff Public Library.

November 1, 7 p.m.I’m Not Scared. An eerie tale set in the pastoral rural landscape of 1970s Italy, this film by Mediterraneo director Gabriele Salvatores digs into the subtly sinister psyche of childhood. Benefits the Banff Food Bank.

December 6, 7 p.m.Valentin. A potent mix of comedy and nostalgia takes the viewer back to 1960s Buenos Aires, for Argeninian filmmaker Alejandro Agresti’s semi-autobiographical sketch of an ebullient young boy and the near-lifeless relatives that surround him. Benefits the Banff Child Care Centre.

January 10, 7 p.m.The Story of the Weeping Camel. Made by film students from Munich, Germany, this lush and personal documentary takes viewers to the harsh, southern plains of Mongolia, where it follows a group of herders through the life-and-death story of one rare white camel. Benefits the Bow Valley SPCA.

All screenings take place at the Lux Cinema in Banff. Individual tickets are $11, and can be purchased in advance through the Banff Centre Box Office (call 762-6301), or at the door (cash only). Fans can also call the Box Office to book three-packs of tickets for $28.50. Watch for the announcement in November of the five films scheduled for early 2005, and the opportunity to buy five-packs of tickets.

Reel Time is generously sponsored by the Avalanche Movie Company, Altitude Publishing, and Johnny Ray’s.
