Walter Phillips Gallery hires senior curator Sylvie Gilbert
Sylvie Gilbert, whose 20-year career has advanced the practice of exhibiting and promoting contemporary art in Canada, has been appointed senior curator at The Banff Centre’s Walter Phillips Gallery and Banff International Curatorial Institute. Since 2001, she has been the director and curator of the Liane and Danny Taran Gallery at the Saidye Bronfman Centre for the Arts in Montreal.
This appointment marks a return to the Walter Phillips Gallery for Gilbert – from 1989 to 1994 she was curator at the Gallery, involved with initiating and producing exhibitions, public programming, and publications.
“Sylvie Gilbert brings a unique and compelling vision to curatorial practice,” says Anthony Kiendl, director of the Walter Phillips Gallery and Visual Arts at The Banff Centre. “Her curiosity, interest in challenging conventions, and over 20 years of experience are all assets that she will contribute in returning to the Walter Phillips Gallery and The Banff Centre. Her past experience in Banff and Alberta will be welcoming to the local art scene, and her national and international experience garnered over the past decade will make this a new challenge, especially as we continue
the development of the Banff International Curatorial Institute.”
Most of Gilbert’s work has been immersed in the practice of curating contemporary art in Canada, and has included teaching, writing, and curating at galleries including the Musee d’Art Contemporain de Montreal, the Centre International d’Art Contemporain de Montreal, the Oboro artist-run centre in Montreal, and Saskatoon’s Photographers Gallery. She was also Canadian Commissioner to the 2004 Sydney Biennial in Australia.
The Walter Phillips Gallery is exclusively committed to the production, presentation, collection and analysis of contemporary art. The Banff International Curatorial Institute (BICI) encompasses a wide range of activities from symposia to residencies, as well as publications, workshops, research, training opportunities and exhibition or site-specific projects, serving communities of curators, artists, researchers, writers, critics, philosophers and other cultural producers at various stages of their careers.
