Cultural Journalism Conversations return with stellar lineup

Cultural Journalism Conversations, the summer Monday night lecture series, is back with an exciting lineup for the month of July. One of the Banff Arts Festival’s most popular series, Cultural Journalism Conversations bring inspiring commentators, journalists and non-fiction writers to Banff, addressing topics that spark exciting ideas and provocative thoughts. As one of our loyal audience members claims, "Monday nights in July are when everyone heads out to The Banff Centre for the lecture series."

The series kicks off on July 2nd with Maclean Hunter Chair Alberto Ruy-Sánchez, a Mexican novelist, editor, publisher, and cultural critic. Since 1988, he has been the publisher and founding editor of Latin America’s leading arts magazine, Artes de México. Following his talk on Canada Day Monday, Ruy-Sánchez will host the three guest speakers.

Listeners of CBC Radio will recognize our July 9th speaker, Eleanor Wachtel, host of Canada’s premier weekly literary radio-show, Writers & Company. Now in its tenth season, Writers & Company offers an opportunity to explore in depth the lives, thoughts, and works of remarkable writers from around the world.

July 16th features Governor General Award winning author Rosemary Sullivan, a writer of poetry, short fiction, biography, and literary criticism. Sullivan is the author of The Red Shoes: Margaret Atwood Starting Out, which went straight to the #1 position on Macleans’ bestseller list upon publication.

The final lecture in the series, on July 23rd, features Lawrence Weschler, a two-time winner of the George Polk Award and a staff writer for The New Yorker since the early eighties, where his work has shuttled between political tragedies and cultural comedies.

Cultural Journalism Conversations run in conjunction with the Creative Non-Fiction and Cultural Journalism program, which offers eight established non-fiction writers an opportunity to develop a major essay or feature piece on a topic in the domain of arts and culture. The guest speakers from Cultural Journalism Conversations make themselves available to these writers for informal discussions and editing sessions. This year’s program participants come from across Canada and the US.

Cultural Journalism Conversations takes place in Rolston Recital Hall at 8 pm on July 2, 9, 16, and 23. The events are free and tickets are not required, but come early to ensure you get a good seat.
