The Banff Centre connects to community through Writing With Style

The Banff Centre once again throws open its doors to the local community, this time for Writing With Style, a program for writers of all levels. Space is available in the genres of memoir, science fiction and fantasy, and writing for children for the spring session that runs April 7 – 12.

Writing with Style is a week-long workshop that gives writers an opportunity to edit and shape a manuscript or work-in-progress under the guidance of an experienced editor. The diverse writing community and group reading nights encourage the development of new ideas and allows writers to gain confidence in their own style and voice.

Edna Alford heads a distinguished faculty for the upcoming spring session that includes Edmonton’s Gloria Sawai, the winner of the 2002 Governor General’s Award for Fiction. Robert J. Sawyer, called "the dean of Canadian science fiction," leads the science fiction and fantasy section of the program. Trevor Herriot, author of River in a Dry Land, leads the memoir section, while Kevin Major, the author of ten novels for young people and adults, leads the Writing for Children group.

"The Writing With Style program offers one of the valuable bridges between community and The Banff Centre," says Banff resident Jane Newman, a participant in last year’s Writing with Style program. "This is one of the most accessible programs the Centre offers." Vancouver writer Andrew Binks says, "My week at The Banff Centre in the Writing With Style workshop changed my life as an artist."

The deadline for Writing With Style applications is January 31, 2003.
