Banff Centre Press releases second book of portraits of Canadian writers
Second Chapter, new this month from the Banff Centre Press, profiles Canadian authors in stunning black and white portraits alongside their own thoughts about the writing life. Set to launch November 19 in Calgary, the book is photographer Don Denton’s follow-up to his original book of portraits, First Chapter. In 1996, Denton set out to create a photographic record of prominent Canadian authors. First Chapter: The Canadian Writers Photography Project collected a sampling of his portraits, including writers such as Margaret Atwood, George Bowering, Karen Connelly, and Michael Turner, as well as newer faces to on the Canadian writing scene. First Chapter received such a positive response that Denton began work on Second Chapter, capturing portraits of authors including Douglas Coupland, Camilla Gibb, and Bill Richardson. Each of the 50 photographs is paired with a statement about the writing life from the profiled author, with advice that ranges from quirky and tongue-in-cheek to serious contemplations of the creative process. Sometimes puzzling, sometimes practical, and often funny, Second Chapter shows the faces of CanLit in a revealing light. Don Denton was born in Burnaby, B.C., and raised in Maple Ridge. He currently lives in Sooke, on Vancouver Island. He started his career as a staff photographer for the Kamloops Daily Sentinel in 1977, and has worked as a photographer and photo editor in Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, and Brussels, Belgium. In the mid-90s, Denton published his own photo magazine, Deadline. He has taught photography at Mount Royal College in Calgary and at the Western Academy of Photography in Victoria. Praise for First Chapter: “This is a really fun, fascinating look at some of Canada’s contemporary writers.” Download print-ready images.
