Festival Kick-Off

An Evening of Highlights Kicks off the Banff Arts Festival at The Banff Centre

Aboriginal Dance, Cultural Journalism, Chamber Music, Shakespeare at the Opera, and much more! The Banff Centre is offering a taste of what is to come at the Banff Arts Festival, running July 12 to August 4. The Festival is to be ushered in with style at the Festival Kick-off on July 12 with a variety of events all day long, culminating in a performance of Festival highlights at 8 p.m. in the Eric Harvie Theatre.

The day’s events: The official Kick-off Performance may be at 8:00 p.m., but there will be a host of impromptu, short "pop-up" performances between noon and 1 p.m. at various downtown locations in Banff (locations TBA). Keep your eyes peeled for this artistic ambush!

Artwalk : If you enjoyed the pop-up performances downtown and want to find out more –- or if you missed it and wish you didn’t -- come up to The Banff Centre campus from 1 to 2 p.m. for a one-hour tour of The Banff Centre campus spotlighting many works from the Permanent Collection that are on public display.

The tour begins at the Walter Phillips Gallery, The Banff Centre. Come for the exploration or come for the exercise – this is FREE!

Kick-Off Performance: A lively and entertaining sampler of Festival events with short performances from Music, Shakespeare in the Park, Festival Dance, Shakespeare at the Opera, and Aboriginal Dance. In addition audiences will be given an introduction to Festival programming from Media & Visual Arts and our popular Cultural Journalism Conversations. Pre-show entertainment will be offered as a brass ensemble performs outside the Eric Harvie Theatre, and selections from The Banff Centre’s Opera as Theatre and Dance Training programs are presented in the East and West Wings of the Eric Harvie Theatre lobby.

8 – 9 p.m., Eric Harvie Theatre, all tickets $10; Pre-show performances begin at 7:00 p.m., outside of, and in lobby of, Eric Harvie Theatre.

Barbeque: Enjoy some refreshments while mingling with faculty and artists in summer programs and Banff Centre staff. FREE to Kick-Off Performance ticket holders.

9-10:30 p.m., outside the Music & Sound Building, July 12
