New Dance Works a highlight at the 2002 Banff Arts Festival

As part of this year’s Banff Arts Festival, Festival Dance will feature two new works as well as a ballet by the great George Balanchine. Festival Dance runs July 24-27 in the Eric Harvie Theatre at The Banff Centre.

Festival Dance showcases emerging professional artists who come to The Banff Centre to participate in the summer Dance Performance program. This summer’s Festival Dance program is exemplary of what The Banff Centre supports: the genesis of new work from both new and established artists; and a dedication to providing performance opportunities and training to artists from around the world. This year’s program includes:

  • The world premiere of Covenant by Benjamin Hatcher, recipient of the 2002 Clifford E. Lee Choreography Award. Set to Heaven & Hell by Vangelis, this majestic work explores the universal journey of humankind, through a world filled with anxiety, chaos, and conflict—the struggle toward salvation, fulfillment, and inner peace.
  • The Requiem 911 Project, a work-in-progress created by Brian Macdonald C.C. with members of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, set to the stirring music of Verdi’s Requiem. Created to honour victims of world terrorism, it will have its world premiere at the National Arts Centre (Ottawa) in September. Sponsored by the Government of Canada*.
  • Allegro Brillante, by seminal choreographer George Balanchine.

The Banff Arts Festival runs from July 12 – August 4. Festival Dance runs July 24, 25, 26, and 27 at 8 pm in the Eric Harvie Theatre.
