Explore the Splendor of the Rocky Mountain Landscape in Paint and on Foot.

Join the Walter Phillips Gallery for an information filled, visually inspiring morning starting with an historical glimpse into the life and work of distinguished artist Walter J. Phillips. The program begins with an introduction to Phillips life and work by local painter Alice Saltiel-Marshall, and a tour of selected works from the Gallery's permanent collection. The morning concludes on an interpretive hike through the Rocky Mountain Landscape that inspired this important Canadian artist.

Walter J. Phillips played an integral role in the development of visual arts practice at The Banff Centre. He taught painting in Banff from 1940 to 1950 and established The Banff Centre as a place where artists could focus and develop their work. A painter, printmaker and writer whose primary fascination remained the landscape, Phillips was a contemporary of the Group of Seven. His work is distinguished by the excellence of its technique in watercolour and wood block printmaking. The Walter Phillips Gallery, which opened in 1977 with a mandate to support contemporary art that addresses the critical issues and ideas of our time, takes its name in honour of Phillips’ creative vision and spirit of experimentation.

In Phillips’s Footsteps runs Saturdays, July 20 and 27 at 10:00 am, and starts in room 204 of the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Building at The Banff Centre. Program length is approximately 2 hours. The cost is $5 or FREE for Arts Lover Passholders.

For more information, please call the Walter Phillips Gallery at 403-762-6281.
