Operetta buffet featured at the 2004 Banff Summer Arts Festival

The intimate, cabaret-style Club venue at The Banff Centre comes to racy, raucous life July 8, 9, and 11 with the irreverent ballads, patter songs, and political satire of Sir William Schwenk Gilbert and Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan. One of the first performance events set for the 2004 Banff Summer Arts Festival, the Gilbert & Sullivan Cabaret offers pithy snippets of the most popular works of Victorian England’s badboys of song.

The fast-paced program will feature favourite excerpts from The Gondoliers, The Mikado, The Pirates of Penzance, Patience, and HMS Pinafore, woven together in an original revue which showcases the talents of The Banff Centre’s summer opera program—and with Sir William and Sir Arthur themselves making “guest appearances”.

Featuring some of North America’s up-and-coming opera stars, the Gilbert & Sullivan Cabaret cast has come to Banff to enhance their voice training with skills in acting and stagecraft. Many of these young artists have already appeared with major companies including Vancouver Opera, Pacific Opera Victoria, Calgary Opera, and Tapestry New Opera Works in Toronto.

Following the Club cabaret dates, the cast will go into rehearsals for the Banff Summer Arts Festival’s full-scale production of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, which is on stage in the Eric Harvie Theatre August 11, 12, 13, and 14.

The Club is a non-smoking, licensed venue on the lower level of the Banff Centre’s Theatre Complex.
