Highlights from the Banff Summer Arts Festival take centre stage July 9 – part of a summer evening kickoff/preview which includes a program of performances and an outdoor barbecue. Beginning at 7:30 pm in the Eric Harvie Theatre, Xerox Canada presents A Taste of the Festival, which officially launches five weeks of festival programming at The Banff Centre.

This potpourri of brief performances will showcase dance, music, opera, Aboriginal arts, cultural talks, visual arts, and new media, giving audience members a snapshot of Festival events to come. The evening kicks off with a performance by the Toronto-based Tokai String Quartet, spotlighting both the summer music concerts and the 8th Banff International String Quartet Competition in late August.

The program will continue with films featuring summer events in both media and visual arts, and Banff Centre programs in writing and publishing. Guests will also get a taste of dance at Banff, with the performance of a Peace Dance by the Vancouver Island-based Gwa’wina Dancers, and excerpts from all three Festival Dance pieces – George Balanchine’s Divertimento No. 15, choreographer Brian Macdonald’s Tam ti Delam, and Configurations of the Body, by Toronto choreographer D.A. Hoskins, who won the 2004 Clifford E. Lee Award for choreography.

Rounding out the program, cast members from the Centre’s production of Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro will present the opera’s rapturous choral finale. Guests and artists are then invited to mingle while enjoying an outdoor barbecue on the patio of the Centre’s Music & Sound Building.

Tickets for A Taste of the Festival are $20 adult, $15 student/senior, $10 child, and free for Arts Lover Passholders. Tickets for all Banff Summer Arts Festival events are available at The Banff Centre Box Office at 1-800-413-8368 or (403) 762-6301, or at box_office@banffcentre.ca.
