Rolston Tribute Concert

During 40 years at The Banff Centre, Isobel and Tom Rolston have taught and mentored a long list of acclaimed musicians, from tenor Ben Heppner to pianist Jon Kimura Parker. On July 10, some of the Centre’s most distinguished music alumni will be returning for a gala concert honouring the Rolstons’ contribution to music development in Canada.

The evening begins with Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 in F Major, featuring Jens Lindemann on trumpet, violinist Joanne Quigley, Stephen Tam on flute, Karissa Werdon on oboe, and George Brough on harpsichord. Then bassoonist Stephane Levesque leads a performance of Jean Francaix’s Divertissement for Bassoon and String Quartet.

The program continues with Katherine Chi, First Laureate in the 2000 Honens International Piano Competition, and the Tokai Quartet, participants in the upcoming 8th Banff International String Quartet Competition. They will perform movements from Erno Dohnanyi’s Piano Quintet No. 1 in C Minor, Op. 1. A tribute video about the Rolstons is then followed by performances by Amir Amiri, a virtuoso on the Kashmiri santour, bassist Edgar Meyer, and jazz musicians Hugh Fraser and Dave Restivo.

Isobel Moore Rolston and Tom Rolston
Since they first arrived in the mid-1960s, both Isobel and Tom Rolston have made an immeasurable contribution to the development of Music & Sound programs at The Banff Centre. Invited to teach music at the Centre by Senator Donald Cameron in 1965, by the late 1970s they had turned a modest music training school into a year-round, intensive program that attracts world-class faculty and promotes a solid foundation of creativity and professionalism in every musician who passes through the Centre. In 2004, as both the Rolstons prepare to retire from their roles as artistic director for Music & Sound (Isobel) and director of summer music programs (Tom), they pass the baton to the capable hands of incoming artistic director David Hoyt, formerly artistic director and resident conductor with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.

Tickets for the Rolston Tribute Concert are $20 adult, $15 student/senior, $10 child, Arts Lover Passholders free. Tickets for all Banff Summer Arts Festival events are available at The Banff Centre Box Office at 1-800-413-8368 or 403-762-6301, or at box_office@banffcentre.ca.
