Improv opera company brings impromptu arias to The Banff Centre

Leading Vocally with David Pearl – Sunday, August 8, 7:30 p.m.
Rolston Recital Hall, The Banff Centre – Free

Performing “opera without a score, script, or safety net,” members of the acclaimed London-based Impropera improvisational opera company will be at The Banff Centre for a series of Leadership Development workshops August 6 to 8, plus an interactive onstage session August 8 in the Rolston Recital Hall.

Crackling with creative energy, improv opera impresario David Pearl leads his company (and his audiences) in unique presentations that explore business and leadership issues in new ways. “We’ll start with a sample of Impropera’s work, and then we’ll move on to discuss the lessons improvisation can teach… how leaders can learn to thrive on ambiguity and uncertainty,” Pearl says. “Our work helps business leaders explore the unexpected and ask the big questions — without expecting answers.”

Created in 1994 by a small team of “opera renegades”, Impropera began as an offshoot of the popular, U.K.-based touring company Opera Circus. It quickly grew into a theatrical company that also offered insight to business leaders at board meetings and corporate retreats.

The Banff Centre’s Leadership Lab, which has established a reputation for offering innovative exercises in leadership and creativity, invited Pearl and his company to share improv opera with Lab participants. The August 6 to 8 workshop series, called “Exploring the Practice of Leadership Through Opera,&rdao; is the latest in a series of creatively focused leadership sessions that have included jazz music, creative writing, and maskmaking. Registration in Leadership Lab workshops is open to anyone.

David Pearl and Impropera will also be on stage in the Rolston Recital Hall on August 8 at 7:30 as part of the Banff Summer Arts Festival for a free public presentation — expect a lively and decidedly interactive demonstration of what Pearl calls “opera from the hip.”

Tickets for the Banff Summer Arts Festival are available at The Banff Centre Box Office at 1-800-413-8368 or (403) 762-6301, or at box_office@banffcentre.ca.
