For Immediate Release The Banff Centre presents a comic gem: The Marriage of Figaro
Following the phenomenal success of Filumena last summer, The Banff Centre’s Opera as Theatre program is delighted to present another public-pleasing opera with full orchestra — Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s fast-paced, humourous and humane masterpiece The Marriage of Figaro, on stage in the Eric Harvie Theatre, August 11, 12, 13, and 14. The story is a satirical romp, featuring the frustrated wedding plans of the wily servant Figaro and his lovely bride-to-be Susanna, with much interference from the lusty Count Almaviva and his neglected wife; and from Cherubino, a teenage boy who can’t wait to learn all about love from anyone who’s willing to teach him. Stage director Kelly Robinson returns to The Banff Centre after his highly lauded direction of Filumena, and renowned conductor David Agler, former music director of the Vancouver Opera, conducts the 45-piece Banff Festival Orchestra. Sets and costumes for this production, by award-winning stage designer Susan Benson, were originally created for a Banff Centre production of Figaro in 1990. Since then, they have toured all over North America, delighting opera audiences throughout Canada and the U.S. The Opera as Theatre program, guided by Glynis Leyshon, artistic director of Vancouver Playhouse, brings Canada’s best young singers to Banff for intensive workshops in acting, voice, and movement. They work with outstanding mentors, including Canadian soprano Edith Wiens, music director Leslie Dala, Calgary-based actor Christopher Hunt, Alexander technique specialist Gwen Dobie, and American bass-baritone Michael Douglas Jones.
