For Immediate Release Banff Centre fashion show mixes style and technology
The latest discoveries in responsive fabrics and wearable technologies will get a runway showcase on August 6 when the Banff New Media Institute hosts its Wearables Fashion Show at 9:30 in the high-ceilinged main hallway of the Jeanne & Peter Lougheed Building at The Banff Centre. Imagine a piece of jewellery with a moving video image embedded in it, or a fabric that can change colour in response to body movements and changing temperatures, or a jacket interwoven with conductive wires to create a flexible circuit board displaying texts and patterns. Designers from around the world have been working at The Banff Centre this summer to advance the art and science of wearable technologies. The results will be woven into the August 6 show. The Wearables project has been developed in conjunction with the Banff New Media Institute’s flagship new media co-production, CodeZebra. The show will feature characters from CodeZebra’s animal-based chat software, in costumes designed with soft computer technologies. Everything will be set to the music of Calgary-based DJ Mary Flowers. The show also celebrates the second anniversary of The Banff Centre’s online magazine of electronic art and culture, HorizonZero, which this month features an issue on technology and fashion – see www.horizonzero.ca. The issue highlights many of the participants in the Wearables show, with profiles of designers including Joey Berezowska, Jenny Tillotson, and Elise Co, and descriptions of the technology behind much of this fashion innovation. --30--
