Governor General’s Study Conference opens at The Banff Centre

April 28, 2000
For Immediate Release

(Banff) The Governor General’s Canadian Study Conference 2000 is coming to Banff. The Conference, which is designed to enhance leadership skill across Canada, will open at The Banff Centre, May 16 - 19.

Conference participants (225) are chosen from business, labour, government, community, and institutional sectors and reflect the diversity of Canada's population and geography. Participants will meet at The Banff Centre for the opening session and then travel in smaller groups to all provinces and territories meeting with community leaders and exploring the Canadian experience. The group then reconvenes in Québec City to present their findings to the Governor General and other members of the Conference.

Banff Centre acting president & CEO, Mary Hofstetter, says the Centre is delighted to be one of the organizers of such a prestigious event. "This Conference happens only once every five years. It is an opportunity for Canadians to learn more about themselves and their country. We are thrilled to be able to showcase our community and our institution to such a diverse group of our country’s leaders and future leaders."

The Centre plans a vibrant launch. Opening ceremonies include performances by Susan Aglukark and Banff Centre alumnus Nan Hughes, as well as a traditional dance performance by the Siksika Nation Dance Troupe. Her Excellency The Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson will deliver the keynote address. Participants will also be addressed by several of Canada’s opinion leaders, including Alberta Premier Ralph Klein, former CBC Radio host Peter Gzowski, and Candadian Labour Congress president Ken Georgetti, on key issues directly related to the Conference theme: Building Stronger Communities: Developing Tomorrow’s Leaders.

The Banff Centre’s production team will be filming many of the Conference sessions both in Banff and in Quebec City to be streamed for the public on the Conference’s Web site, www.canstudy200.org.
