Event raises $100,000 for Paul D. Fleck Fellowships in the Arts

More than 100 friends and supporters of The Banff Centre attended an evening tribute recently to celebrate the memory of Paul D. Fleck (1934 - 1992), the Centre’s visionary president from 1982 to 1992. The event, held September 19, 2000 at the Calgary Golf & Country Club, raised nearly $100,000 for the Paul D. Fleck Fellowships in the Arts.

The Fleck family established the Paul D. Fleck Fellowships in the Arts in recognition of Paul’s dedication to the creative spirit. Each year, proceeds from the endowment fund enable artists in all disciplines to participate in Banff Centre programs and to create new work as Paul D. Fleck Fellows.

"We were thrilled by the outpouring of support, and moved by the level of emotion that surfaced during this event," said Tom Berekoff, the Centre’s director of Development. "Paul was a man of vision and influence. He brought the Centre’s reputation to new international heights. It’s clear that his legacy lives on." The evening featured a poetry reading by his wife Polly, inspirational commentary by Jeanne Lougheed, and comments from brother Jim Fleck on behalf of the family

The Fleck family has agreed to match the money raised at the event to bring the endowment for the Paul D. Fleck Fellowships in the Arts to a total of $700,000. They also agreed to continue to match up to $150,000 of additional donations until the end of 2001. At that point, the endowment will have a balance of $1 million and will be able to provide for 20 Fleck Fellowships a year to artists seeking professional development at The Banff Centre. Fleck Fellows will be selected primarily on the basis of acknowledged achievement or recognition of high potential for artistic excellence.
