Help Banff Run: Volunteers Needed at the Banff Mountain Ekiden Run
Curious about races but not ready to run? Take a run at volunteering. Come out and take a closer look at one of the Bow Valley’s most popular races, have fun, and help others meet their goals.
Banff Mountain Ekiden Run organizers are looking for volunteers on Saturday October 19 to help make the 13th annual Ekiden Run another success. Last year, Ekiden attracted 200 teams and 1000 participants (even running up a significant waiting list), raising a record $30, 000.
This year, thanks to a unique collaboration of Bow Valley businesses and organizations, proceeds from this fundraising event will support arts scholarships and programming, as well as the Banff Skirunners, Banff’s cross-country ski team.
Volunteers are needed for various duties including traffic control and aid station assistance. All volunteers will receive an Ekiden T-shirt and a free lunch, and are invited to an orientation party on Wednesday, October 16 in the Foyer Lounge in the Max Bell from 4 - 6 p.m. The party features special draw prizes, a buffet and beverages.
The Ekiden Run, modeled after a traditional Japanese relay race is presented this year by Valentine Volvo and The Running Room. The beauty of the Ekiden Run is that it caters to all levels of runners. This scenic five-leg relay incorporates a variety of leg-distances, from 5 km to 12.7 km, for a total run of 43 km.
"We are all looking forward to the Ekiden Run. For many runners, it’s an annual, end-of season race that brings people together—from the Bow Valley, Calgary, and Edmonton—for a team event in a spectacular mountain setting," says Sarah Hayes, director of Development at The Banff Centre. "This year Ekiden is more of a community event than ever. Mountain Magic Equipment is handling registration, accommodation packages are by Banff Caribou Properties, and photographs are by Express Shots Photography. Working with the Banff Skirunners has been particularly enriching to this event, as they bring their dynamic and motivated spirit to the playing field," Hayes adds.
