John Murrell is named to the Alberta Order of Excellence
|
John Murrell, artistic director/executive producer of Theatre Arts at
The Banff Centre and one of Canada’s most prominent playwrights, has been
inducted into the Alberta Order of Excellence.
The Order of Excellence was established in 1979 to recognize Albertans who have made an outstanding contribution to the province. It is one of the highest honours the Province can bestow on a citizen. Murrell is recognized for his significant impact on Alberta and Canada’s cultural heritage. He is a playwright, translator, and teacher who has inspired a generation of Alberta artists. His plays have been translated into 15 languages and performed in 30 countries around the world. His works are staples of the Canadian stage, including his best known and most often performed piece, Waiting for the Parade. Earlier in 2002, Murrell was awarded the 2002 Walter Carson Award for Excellence in the Performing Arts.
