A constructive twist to renovations: The Banff Centre donates bathtubs to worthy cause

They are too big to wrap, but The Banff Centre is giving a gift of approximately 80 bathtubs and other used bathroom fixtures to ReStore, a Calgary store that sells both new and used appliances and furniture. Proceeds from the sales of these bathtubs, vanities, sinks, and mirrors will go to Habitat for Humanity—a project whose mission is to build homes for low-income families.

The bathroom items are being donated as a result of the renovations of two Banff Centre residence buildings, Lloyd Hall and Corbett Hall. "We wanted to act in accordance with the environmentally sensitive values of The Banff Centre," says Wayne Stevens, director of Physical Facilities at The Banff Centre. "We didn’t want the appliances in these bathrooms—which are in perfectly good condition—to go to landfill sites, so we asked our contractor, Gabriel Construction, to come up with an alternative."

Gabriel Construction’s project manager Rick Schmeichel says Gabriel Construction Ltd. was happy to rise to the challenge of finding an ecologically sensitive solution. "As a contracting firm we always strive to find environmentally friendly solutions to our project requirements," he says.

Diane Reid, manager of public affairs for Habitat for Humanity in Calgary, is thrilled by the forward-looking initiative. "This donation means a great deal, especially during this season of giving, when temperatures are dropping and people just want to hunker down in a home that is theirs."
